Everton Football Club has announced the signing of Republic of Ireland international Jake O'Brien from Lyon on a four-year deal. The 23-year-old centre-back, who stands at 6ft 6in tall, becomes the Toffees' fifth summer arrival.
O'Brien's Background and Career
Born on May 15, 2001, in County Cork, Ireland, O'Brien was a multi-talented sportsman who excelled in boxing, hurling, and Gaelic football. He began his football career at Cork City, making his senior debut in 2019. O'Brien then moved to Crystal Palace in 2021, spending loan spells at Swindon Town and RWD Molenbeek before joining Lyon in August 2023. He featured 32 times for Lyon, scoring five goals, and represented the Republic of Ireland at Under-21 level before making his senior debut in June.
Playing Style and Fit
O'Brien describes himself as a "ball-playing centre half, fast, [who likes] to attack in both boxes and bring a bit of excitement." He will compete with Michael Keane and Mason Holgate for a starting spot, particularly in matches where Sean Dyche operates with a three-man defence.
Everton's Transfer Activity
O'Brien joins attacking midfielders Iliman Ndiaye and Jesper Lindstrom, as well as Jack Harrison, who rejoined the club on loan. Tim Iroegbunam also joined from Aston Villa, while Amadou Onana and Lewis Dobbin moved in the opposite direction.
Upcoming Fixtures
Everton continues their pre-season preparations at Coventry City on Tuesday night, followed by a visit to Preston North End on Saturday. They begin their Premier League campaign at home to Brighton & Hove Albion on August 17.
