Brentford's new signing, Igor Thiago, has suffered a knee injury during the club's first pre-season match against AFC Wimbledon. The 23-year-old Brazilian forward, who joined the Bees from Club Brugge, sustained a meniscus injury and will undergo further scans next week to determine the extent of the problem.
Thiago had made a promising start to his Brentford career, scoring a brace in the 5-2 win over Wimbledon and earning the No 9 shirt. However, his injury will keep him out of the club's upcoming pre-season matches against Benfica, Watford, and Wolfsburg.
The striker's journey to the Premier League has been remarkable, having started his career as a bricklayer before moving to Europe to play for Ludogorets and then Club Brugge. In his single season with the Belgian club, Thiago scored 18 goals in 34 appearances and helped the team win the Jupiler Pro League title. He also impressed in the UEFA Conference League, scoring seven goals and being named the tournament's Player of the Season.
Brentford will begin their Premier League campaign at home to Crystal Palace on Sunday, August 18, and will hope to have Thiago back in the squad soon. The club's manager will be waiting for the results of the further scans before determining the best course of action for the injured striker.
