U.S. Soccer Announces Departure of Head Coach Gregg Berhalter

On Wednesday, U.S. Soccer announced that Gregg Berhalter is no longer the head coach of the U.S. Men's National Team (USMNT). This decision comes after the team's disappointing performance in the 2024 Copa América, where they failed to advance beyond the group stage.

Berhalter's tenure as head coach began in December 2018, and he led the team to the Round of 16 in the 2022 FIFA World Cup. He was rehired in June 2023 for another cycle. During his time as head coach, Berhalter achieved several successes, including winning the Concacaf Nations League titles in 2019-20 and 2023-24, and the Concacaf Gold Cup championship in 2021. He leaves with a record of 44 wins, 17 losses, and 13 draws.

U.S. Soccer President Cindy Parlow Cone expressed gratitude for Berhalter's dedication and hard work, but stated that the team is now focused on finding a new coach to lead them into a new era of success. Sporting Director Matt Crocker will lead the search process, which has already begun. The goal is to find a coach who can maximize the team's potential as they prepare for the 2026 FIFA World Cup, which the U.S. will co-host with Canada and Mexico.

Berhalter's coaching career began as an assistant with the LA Galaxy, followed by a stint in Sweden with Hammarby. He then became the manager of the Columbus Crew from 2013-18. As a player, Berhalter was capped 44 times by the U.S. and made the roster for the 2002 and 2006 World Cups.

The USMNT will next face Canada in an international friendly on September 7 at Sporting Kansas City's Children's Mercy Park.

The search for a new head coach is underway, and the team looks forward to a new era of success under the guidance of a new leader.
