Chicago Fire FC Signs Midfielder Kellyn Acosta
Chicago Fire FC has made a significant move by signing midfielder Kellyn Acosta in free agency, solidifying their roster ahead of the upcoming MLS season. Acosta, a US international, brings experience and leadership to the team, having won the MLS Cup 2022 with LAFC.
Sporting director Georg Heitz expressed delight at Acosta's arrival, emphasizing his qualities as a central midfielder and his belief in the club's vision. Acosta's career began as an FC Dallas homegrown player, and he has since established himself as a consistent performer in MLS, contributing 18 goals and 25 assists in 252 matches across various clubs.
Internationally, Acosta boasts 58 appearances for the USMNT, including participation in the 2022 FIFA World Cup and winning two Gold Cups and a Nations League title.
Acosta's signing follows Chicago's recent acquisition of striker Hugo Cuypers from Gent, underscoring the club's ambition to strengthen its squad. Alongside established players like goalkeeper Chris Brady, and midfielders Xherdan Shaqiri and Brian GutiƩrrez, Acosta and Cuypers aim to propel Chicago Fire FC towards success in the upcoming season.
The team, led by head coach Frank Klopas, kicks off their campaign against the Philadelphia Union on February 24, with aspirations of securing a spot in the Audi MLS Cup Playoffs for the first time since 2017.
