Miners who moved to California in 1849 to search for gold are known as "forty-niners". The term comes from the year they began to arrive in California. 

The California Gold Rush began in 1848, when James W. Marshall found gold in the tailrace of a lumber mill. In 1849, tens of thousands of migrants from around the world traveled to California to search for gold. They arrived in covered wagons, clipper ships, and on horseback. 

The influx of people was a boon for California's economy and helped the state transition to statehood in 1850. The Gold Rush is estimated to have produced 750,000 pounds of gold, with the peak year being 1852

What was life like as a 49er?

Life as a 49er was hard work, dangerous, and lonely. Miners spent 12–16 hours a day digging, scraping, hauling, and washing dirt and gravel. Many miners died from diseases or accidents like drowning. 

Here are some other challenges 49ers faced:

Isolation: Miners were exposed to loneliness and homesickness.

Bad food: Miners ate simple meals, usually just beans and bacon. As time went on, food got more expensive and harder to find.

Fire: Fire was a common threat due to the huge quantities of wood and other flammable materials used in mining and everyday life.

Lack of housing, sanitation, and law enforcement: The lack of housing, sanitation, and law enforcement in the mining camps and surrounding areas created a dangerous mix.

Storms: 49ers encountered terrible storms.

Inadequate food and water: 49ers encountered inadequate food and water.

Diseases: 49ers encountered rampant diseases.

Overcrowding: 49ers encountered overcrowding.

Shipwrecks: 49ers encountered shipwrecks. 

What did miners like to do for fun?

Miners and their families enjoyed music, theater, and dancing. Some miners brought portable instruments with them to the goldfields. 

Drinking and gambling were also popular forms of entertainment. Miners would leave their camps to go to gambling saloons, which were made from a plank table and canvas for shade.
