Gianluca Busio, the 21-year-old midfielder, has earned his third nomination for the 2023 Chipotle U.S. Soccer Young Male Player of the Year. This recognition follows his impactful return to the senior USMNT and leadership role with the Men’s Olympic Team.
Busio's notable achievements in 2023 include a call-up to the senior USMNT for the 2023 Concacaf Gold Cup after a 16-month hiatus. During the tournament, he showcased his prowess in all five games, starting four, and marked his first senior international goal against Trinidad and Tobago. Notably, he also scored a crucial penalty kick in the shootout victory against Canada in the quarterfinals.
Additionally, Busio demonstrated his commitment to the Men’s Olympic Team, appearing in all four matches during its first two training camps of the cycle. His leadership qualities were further exemplified as he captained the U.S. against Mexico in the preparation match for Paris 2024.
On the club level, Busio played a pivotal role in Venezia's success in Serie B, helping them secure second place in the table by playing in all 16 games and starting 15. His contributions included scoring two crucial goals for the Winged Lions, the opening goal in a 3-2 victory against Parma on Oct. 7 and the lone tally in a 1-0 win against Ternana on Nov. 4.
Moreover, at the end of the 2022-23 season, Busio played a significant role in Venezia's journey to the Serie B promotion playoffs, making 14 appearances in the spring.
