After 12 matches | Nunez's goal, Liverpool returned to the top
His last previous goal for Liverpool was on November 1, against Bournemouth in the League Cup. Darwin Nunez was goalless in 12 consecutive matches across all competitions. The Uruguayan striker finally scored today, against Burnley at Turf Murray.
His goal in the sixth minute of the match gave Liverpool their second goal in the 90th minute. Diego Jota returned from injury to double the lead. Jurgen Klopp's team won the Premier League match against Burnley 2-0.
In this victory, Liverpool returned to the top with 42 points in 19 matches. However, if Arsenal beat West Ham on Thursday night, the Gunners will be back on top.
However, looking at the scoreline of the match, it is not clear how much power Liverpool played and how many attacks they made. Salah would have won this match by a much bigger margin if not for the great saves of Burnley goalkeeper James Trafford.
The win is sure to boost Liverpool's confidence after draws with Manchester United and Arsenal before the big day.
Going to play the last match of the year, Liverpool had arranged one attack after another. So they took 14 shots before the break, 8 of which were on target for Burnley. In 6 minutes, Nunez gave Liverpool the lead by giving and taking the ball with Cody Gakpo.
Harvey Elliott also sent the ball into the Burnley net in the 55th minute. But VAR showed that Salah was offside, the goal was disallowed.
Before and after Trafford, Gakpo, Dominic Soboslai and Trent Alexander-Arnold shot back one after the other. However, he could not go to the 90th minute. Jota scored a great goal from a difficult spot after receiving the ball from Luis Diaz's back heel. Burnley could not return to the match after that.
