Wolfsburg Secures 1-0 Victory Over RB Leipzig, Ending Their Reign in the German Cup
Wolfsburg managed to defeat RB Leipzig 1-0 in the German Cup second round, effectively putting an end to the reigning champions' two-year dominance in the competition. Vaclav Cerny's first-half goal proved decisive, with Leipzig's Yussuf Poulsen being sent off early in the second half after receiving a second booking.
Cerny's breakthrough occurred in the 14th minute, capitalizing on a flawless through ball from Tiago Tomas, allowing him to charge into the box with minimal resistance and strike into the top corner. Despite a chance to extend the lead, Cerny missed an opportunity due to a defensive misunderstanding, shooting wide from a clear goal-scoring position.
Leipzig displayed increased aggression in the second half and came close to scoring, hitting the woodwork through David Raum. However, their hopes of a comeback were dashed when Poulsen was given his marching orders in the 56th minute following a clumsy foul on Aster Jan Vranckx.
Meanwhile, in another Bundesliga clash, VfB Stuttgart secured their place in the third round with a 1-0 victory over Union Berlin, who have now suffered 11 consecutive defeats across all competitions.
The upcoming fixtures include Bayern Munich's visit to Saarbruecken on Wednesday and Borussia Dortmund's hosting of Hoffenheim.
