Sotheby's Auction: Messi's 2022 World Cup Shirts Target Record-Breaking Memorabilia
A highly anticipated auction by Sotheby's is set to feature six shirts worn by Lionel Messi during Argentina's triumphant 2022 World Cup campaign, with expectations that this collection will become the "most valuable" in sports memorabilia. The assortment includes the jersey worn by Messi during the first half of the final in Qatar. Sotheby's estimates the extraordinary collection to surpass $10 million, potentially setting a record for the most valuable sports memorabilia at auction.
A notable aspect of this auction is its philanthropic connection, as a portion of the proceeds will be donated to the UNICAS Project. This initiative, led by Sant Joan de Déu (SJD) Barcelona Children’s Hospital with the support of the Leo Messi Foundation, aims to address the needs of children suffering from rare diseases.
The bidding for these iconic white and sky blue shirts is scheduled to be open from November 30 to December 14, coinciding with a public exhibition showcasing the historic collection. Sotheby's has not disclosed the specific amount of proceeds earmarked for charity.
The potential success of this auction could surpass the current record held by Michael Jordan’s jersey from the 1998 NBA Finals, which fetched a staggering $10.1 million last year, marking the highest price paid for a game-worn sports memorabilia item.
