Georgi Petkov: A Record-Breaking Performance for Slavia Sofia
Slavia Sofia's veteran goalkeeper Georgi Petkov made history once again in the Bulgarian top-flight football, as he entered the field as a substitute in the team's 1-0 defeat to Hebar Pazardzhik on Sunday. The 47-year-old Petkov, known for his earlier appearances for Bulgaria spanning from 1998 to 2018, replaced 26-year-old Nikolay Krustev during stoppage time, securing the record for the oldest player to participate in a Bulgarian top-flight match.
In a remarkable display of skill, Petkov even saved a penalty during the match, celebrating with a shushing gesture. However, the Video Assistant Referee (VAR) intervened, ruling that the penalty should be retaken as Petkov was not on his line. Consequently, Georgi Valchev scored the winning goal in the 98th minute when given a second opportunity.
Praising Petkov's experience and prowess, Valchev acknowledged the goalkeeper's agility, stating, "Petkov is a very experienced and cunning goalkeeper. I'm glad that even on the second time, I managed to outsmart him. It's no coincidence that he has been in football for so many years. A big 'bravo'!"
This recent feat adds to Petkov's earlier achievement in August 2018 when he previously set the record for the oldest player in the Bulgarian top-flight, showcasing a stellar performance and earning the title of the man of the match in a 0-0 draw against champions Ludogorets.
