Atletico Madrid secured a 2-1 victory against struggling Alaves in LaLiga on Sunday, with Rodrigo Riquelme and Alvaro Morata finding the net in the first half. This win propelled Atletico to the third position in the league standings, amassing 25 points. With a game in hand on their title contenders, they now trail leaders Real Madrid and second-placed Girona by three points, while maintaining a slim one-point lead over fourth-placed Barcelona.

Riquelme opened the scoring for Atletico in the 26th minute, tapping in from close range after a well-placed cross from Alvaro Morata. Morata then doubled the lead just before half-time, showcasing his individual prowess with a well-taken goal.

Despite Atletico's dominant performance, Alaves managed to grab a consolation goal in stoppage time through midfielder Ander Guevara's precise strike from the edge of the box, nestling into the bottom left corner.

Atletico's latest triumph extends their home winning streak in LaLiga to 14 games, matching their previous record set at the Vicente Calderon stadium from May 2012 to February 2013. Furthermore, their tally of 72 goals in 2023 puts them on par with Manchester City, placing them third among the teams in Europe's top five leagues, trailing only Borussia Dortmund (78) and Bayern Munich (77) in terms of goals scored.
