Spain Calls Up Torres and Pino to Replace Injured Stars for Euro 2024 Qualifiers
The Spanish national football team has made changes to its roster ahead of the Euro 2024 qualifiers against Cyprus due to injuries to key players. Barcelona's forward, Ferran Torres, and Villarreal's midfielder, Yeremy Pino, have been called up to replace the injured Marco Asensio and Dani Olmo, as announced by the Royal Spanish Football Federation.
During Spain's recent match against Georgia, Paris St Germain's Marco Asensio and RB Leipzig's Dani Olmo both had to be substituted in the first half due to physical complaints. Spain went on to dominate the game, winning 7-1.
Ferran Torres, aged 23, had last represented Spain at the 2022 World Cup in Qatar, where Spain was unexpectedly eliminated by Morocco in the last-16 stage. Notably, this call-up marks his first inclusion in the Spain squad under the management of the new head coach, Luis de la Fuente. Torres, with 35 caps to his name, is expected to bolster the Spanish attack.
Yeremy Pino, a 20-year-old talent with 11 appearances for the Spanish national team, is also joining the squad. Pino had previously made an impact by scoring in the UEFA Nations League semi-finals against Italy.
The Royal Spanish Football Federation issued a statement on Saturday, confirming the additions of Ferran Torres and Yeremy Pino to the national team. They will be preparing for the upcoming match against Cyprus, which will take place at the Estadio de Los Carmenes stadium.
Spain, the reigning champions of the 2023 UEFA Nations League, currently holds the second position in Group A with six points from three matches. They trail Scotland by nine points, although Scotland has played two more games. Spain's next fixture will be against Cyprus, and they will be hosting the match in Granada on Tuesday as they aim to secure a victory in their Euro 2024 qualifying campaign.
