In a thrilling Euro 2024 qualifier match, Portugal's Bruno Fernandes emerged as the hero, securing a vital 1-0 victory over Slovakia on Friday. This victory not only propelled Portugal five points ahead of their rivals in Group J but also maintained their impeccable record with five wins in as many games.

The turning point of the match occurred just two minutes before halftime when Bruno Fernandes unleashed a precise, low strike that found its way past Slovakia's goalkeeper, Martin Dubravka, into the far corner of the net. This crucial goal marked Fernandes' third contribution to the Euro 2024 qualifiers, coinciding with his 29th birthday.

Portugal's journey in this game didn't start as smoothly as they had hoped. Slovakia, displaying early promise, had two noteworthy opportunities within the opening 15 minutes, spearheaded by forward Robert Polievka and winger Lukas Haraslin. Haraslin, in particular, came agonizingly close to opening the scoring with a curled shot from the edge of the penalty area that narrowly missed the right post as the first half drew to a close.

However, Fernandes' goal shifted the momentum in Portugal's favor. In the second half, coach Roberto Martinez's side exhibited their trademark dominance, controlling possession and pressing for an extended lead. Slovakia, on the other hand, showcased resilience in keeping the deficit to just one goal.

With this crucial victory, Portugal has now amassed an impressive 15 points in the group standings. Slovakia remains in second place with 10 points, sharing this position with Luxembourg, who secured a 3-1 victory against Iceland. Slovakia is ambitiously aiming for their third consecutive qualification for the European finals.

The excitement continues as these two formidable teams clash once more on October 13th in Porto, promising another thrilling encounter in their Euro 2024 qualification campaign. Portugal will first host Luxembourg on Monday in what is expected to be another pivotal match on their quest to secure a spot in the European Championship.
