Olympic champion and two-time World Cup winner Megan Rapinoe bid a heartfelt farewell to her illustrious international football career following the United States' 2-0 victory over South Africa in a friendly match held at Soldier Field stadium in Chicago on a Sunday.

The indomitable 38-year-old striker played an instrumental role in both of her team's goals during this farewell game. She executed a masterful long pass to set up Trinity Rodman's goal, courtesy of a precise delivery to Alex Morgan, and then took a corner that led to Emily Sonnett's powerful header finding the back of the net.

Rapinoe, a recipient of prestigious accolades including the Golden Boot, Golden Ball, and Ballon d'Or for her outstanding contributions during the U.S.'s triumphant 2019 World Cup campaign, left the pitch in the 52nd minute amidst a resounding standing ovation from the crowd. She passed on the captain's armband to Lindsey Horan and shared heartfelt embraces with her teammates.

Reflecting on her remarkable career, Rapinoe expressed her gratitude, saying, "It has been such an honor to wear this shirt, play alongside these extraordinary players, and fulfill my childhood dream."

Megan Rapinoe's international career boasts an impressive record of 203 caps and 63 goals for her national team. Over the course of four World Cups, she clinched victories in 2015 and 2019, in addition to helping the U.S. secure Olympic gold at the 2012 London Games.

Beyond her prowess on the field, Rapinoe's activism and charismatic off-field persona propelled her to household fame. She championed causes such as LGBT+ rights, took a vocal stand against racism, and fought tirelessly for equal pay in women's soccer.

As she concludes her international journey, Rapinoe is set to make her final appearance in the National Women's Soccer League regular season with OL Reign on October 6, facing the Washington Spirit in Seattle.
