Antony to Resume Training Amid Ongoing Assault Allegations
Manchester United has confirmed that their winger, Antony, will be returning to training and will be eligible for selection while ongoing police inquiries continue regarding assault allegations against him. This development was announced by the Premier League club on Friday.
In September, Antony was withdrawn from the Brazilian national team's squad for two World Cup qualifying matches due to ongoing police investigations concerning allegations made by his former girlfriend, Gabriela Cavallin. It's important to note that Antony has consistently denied any wrongdoing.
Manchester United, in a statement, mentioned, "Since allegations were first made in June, Antony has co-operated with police inquiries in both Brazil and the UK, and he continues to do so." As his employer, the club has decided to allow him to resume training at Carrington and remain available for selection as the police inquiries progress. However, this decision will be subject to review pending further developments in the case.
According to reports in British media, Antony returned to England earlier in the week and voluntarily attended an interview with Greater Manchester Police (GMP) on Thursday.
Both Brazilian authorities and GMP are actively investigating the allegations against Antony. In addition to the initial allegations, two more women have come forward with claims of physical assault by Antony. It's essential to note that Antony has not been arrested or charged in connection with these allegations and has denied them as well.
Previously, the club had granted Antony a period of absence, during which he missed Manchester United's last two Premier League fixtures, their Champions League match against Bayern Munich, and their League Cup victory over Crystal Palace.
Manchester United's next match is scheduled to be at home against Crystal Palace in the Premier League on Saturday.
