Manchester City, the reigning Premier League champions, extended their remarkable streak of consecutive home victories to 17 across all competitions. However, their hard-fought 1-0 win against Newcastle United on Saturday revealed the tenacity of the visiting team.


A moment of brilliance from Julian Alvarez secured the victory for Pep Guardiola's squad. Nevertheless, the collective sigh of relief from Manchester City players at the final whistle indicated the formidable challenge posed by Newcastle.


With this victory, Manchester City joined Brighton and Hove Albion at the top of the early-season table with six points each. Brighton had earlier put on an impressive performance, defeating Wolverhampton Wanderers 4-1 away.


Despite their aspirations, Manchester United couldn't match the pace set by City and Brighton. They suffered a 2-0 loss against Tottenham Hotspur, marking Ange Postecoglou's first home game in charge of the London team.


Liverpool overcame a goal deficit to triumph over Bournemouth with a 3-1 scoreline. However, they had to cope with being reduced to 10 men after Alexis Mac Allister received a red card on his home debut.


Brentford continued their remarkable run by remaining unbeaten in 11 consecutive London derbies. They secured a comfortable 3-0 victory against Fulham, who also had a player sent off after conceding a penalty.


Manchester City showcased their strength by prevailing over Newcastle even in the absence of Kevin de Bruyne, who underwent surgery following an injury. The club's previous season's treble victory was celebrated before the kickoff at The Etihad Stadium.


While City is set to contend for multiple trophies this season, Newcastle demonstrated why Guardiola considers them strong contenders for the Premier League crown.


Despite Newcastle's resilience, Manchester City had the upper hand in the first half, during which Julian Alvarez scored a powerful goal in the 31st minute, assisted by Phil Foden.


Although Newcastle gained momentum in the second half, they were unable to breach Manchester City's robust defense. Eddie Howe, Newcastle's manager, acknowledged City's skillful ball possession and pressuring tactics.


Tottenham Hotspur defied pre-season doubts, showcasing a vibrant performance against Manchester United. They secured a victory with Pape Matar Sarr's first Premier League goal and a late own goal by Lisandro Martinez.


Brighton's impressive start to the season continued as they triumphed over Wolves. Their dominant nine-minute spell in the second half saw three goals, placing them ahead of Manchester City on goal difference.


Liverpool faced a more formidable challenge from Bournemouth this time, responding to an early deficit with goals from Luis Diaz, Mohamed Salah, and Diogo Jota. However, their victory was marred by Mac Allister's red card for a high tackle.


Brentford displayed their prowess by defeating Fulham with goals from Bryan Mbeumo and Yoane Wissa, along with an unfortunate penalty conceded by Tim Ream.


In upcoming matches, West Ham United will face Chelsea, while Aston Villa hosts Everton, as all four teams strive for their first win of the season.
