Luis Enrique Hopeful for Mbappe Contract Resolution at PSG
Manager Luis Enrique expressed his optimism for a resolution to the Kylian Mbappe dispute at Paris Saint-Germain (PSG), drawing on the club's history of resolving contract issues with the French superstar.
Tensions have escalated between Mbappe and PSG since he announced his decision not to renew his contract, which concludes at the end of the 2023-24 season, potentially allowing him to depart on a free transfer.
PSG President Nasser Al-Khelaifi has firmly stated that they will not allow Mbappe to leave for free, having invested 180 million euros in his signing. Reports indicate that the forward has been excluded from the main squad of the Ligue 1 champions.
This situation echoes a previous contract standoff between PSG and Mbappe, which was resolved when Mbappe extended his contract after PSG rejected an offer from Real Madrid.
Enrique, ahead of Saturday's season-opening match against Lorient, stated, "We've encountered this situation before, and a resolution was reached between the club and the player. I hope for a similar outcome. The club's philosophy is unequivocal: the club's interests are paramount, and I fully endorse that."
Mbappe's potential departure isn't the only uncertainty surrounding PSG, as reports in French media suggest that Neymar and Marco Verratti may also be deemed surplus to requirements.
While Enrique refrained from discussing his conversations with Neymar and Verratti, he emphasized that his decisions as manager would reflect his standpoint.
Turning to transfers, Enrique confirmed PSG's imminent acquisition of Barcelona forward Ousmane Dembele, revealing, "While he's not yet officially a PSG player and won't be present tomorrow, we're almost there. Not quite 100%, but I'd say about 99% certain he'll become a PSG player."
Enrique also outlined his vision for PSG's playing style, aiming for a dynamic approach characterized by attacking football and high-intensity pressing. He underlined the team's commitment to delivering exhilarating performances and acknowledged the players' enthusiasm in training. As PSG strives to secure a record-extending 12th Ligue 1 title and contend for the elusive Champions League trophy, Enrique's focus on an exciting and proactive brand of football is poised to shape the team's trajectory.
