Diego Rossi's Return Ignites Columbus Crew's Summer Transfer Triumph
The Columbus Crew have made a significant impact during the MLS summer transfer window by announcing the return of Diego Rossi to the league. The talented Uruguayan player, who was with Turkish Süper Lig club Fenerbahçe, has now become a Designated Player for the Crew. His contract is set to extend until the conclusion of the 2026 MLS season, with an option for 2027.
Diego Rossi, formerly a standout player for LAFC, has joined the Crew just two days after the departure of Lucas Zelarayán, a star player and top scorer, to the Saudi Pro League. This move had raised concerns among Columbus' fan base. However, the club's management acted swiftly to create a new trio of Designated Players, consisting of Rossi, forward Cucho Hernández, and midfielder Darlington Nagbe.
Expressing his enthusiasm, club president and general manager Tim Bezbatchenko stated, "Diego is not only a skilled and exciting player, but also a proven winner. We are thrilled to welcome him to the Crew. He possesses a natural knack for scoring and setting up goals, which he has consistently demonstrated in his performances, particularly during his time in Europe. Diego's addition significantly enhances our dynamic offensive strategy. Equally important, he aligns perfectly with our club's desired culture and playing style."
Diego Rossi, at the age of 25, initially rose to fame during his tenure at LAFC from 2018 to 2021, following his transfer from Uruguayan side Peñarol. His contributions were remarkable, amassing an impressive record of 48 goals and 21 assists in 104 regular-season matches for the Black & Gold. Notably, he etched his name in club history by scoring its inaugural goal.
While playing for LAFC, Rossi's exceptional talent earned him recognition as a two-time MLS All-Star (in 2019 and 2021). In 2020, he clinched an impressive trio of awards: the MLS Golden Boot presented by Audi, MLS Young Player of the Year, and a spot in the MLS Best XI.
Subsequently, Rossi made the move from LAFC to Fenerbahçe in September 2021, initially on a loan deal before securing a permanent transfer. Throughout his time with the Turkish club, he contributed with 10 goals and 20 assists in a total of 90 appearances across various competitions.
Now, as he joins the Columbus Crew, Rossi becomes part of the league's highest-scoring offense, which managed to net 45 goals. The Crew, under the guidance of new head coach Wilfried Nancy, are striving to secure a spot in the Audi MLS Cup Playoffs. Their attacking prowess was previously spearheaded by Zelarayán, Hernández, and striker Christian Ramirez, propelling the club to sixth place in the Eastern Conference standings.
The Crew's latest move on the deadline day reflects their active approach to the summer transfer window. In addition to Diego Rossi, the club has welcomed other notable additions, including US international midfielder/defender Julian Gressel, as well as center backs Yevhen Cheberko and Rudy Camacho, all of whom are now part of Nancy's ongoing project.
