In a surprising turn of events, former Liverpool and England midfielder Steven Gerrard has been appointed as the coach of Saudi club Al-Ettifaq, despite previously declining the offer. The Saudi Pro League team announced the news on Monday, welcoming Gerrard as the latest addition to the league's prestigious roster.

Al-Ettifaq took to Twitter to express their excitement, stating, "Where legends are found. We're thrilled to announce Steven Gerrard is our new head coach." Recognizing his illustrious career, they added, "He's no stranger to silverware. A Legend who brings a glorious history and exciting future to Ettifaq."

Club president Khalid Al-Dabal expressed his joy after Gerrard signed a two-year contract, considering it one of the most significant and influential deals in the Saudi Pro League.

Gerrard, 43, recently led Rangers to their first Scottish Premiership title in a decade before departing for Aston Villa, where he was later sacked in October. As he takes on the coaching role at Al-Ettifaq, he follows in the footsteps of his former teammate Robbie Fowler, who was appointed as the coach of Saudi second-division team Al-Qadsiah just last week.

While Gerrard achieved remarkable success during his career, including winning the Champions League in 2005, he never lifted the Premier League trophy during his 17-year tenure with Liverpool.

This move adds to the growing trend of high-profile signings in the Saudi Pro League, with Al-Nassr acquiring Cristiano Ronaldo in December and Al-Ittihad welcoming former Real Madrid striker Karim Benzema in June.

Al-Ettifaq finished seventh in the Saudi Pro League last season. Additionally, Al-Hilal recently reappointed Portuguese coach Jorge Jesus on a one-year contract, further intensifying the competition in the league.
