In a remarkable El Tráfico match on July 4th, the LA Galaxy showcased their true potential as MLS contenders. Surprisingly, Riqui Puig stood out as one of the league's top players.

The implications of the Galaxy's 2-1 victory over their local rivals, LAFC, in front of a historic crowd of 82,110 fans at the Rose Bowl, were monumental. Puig, who gained attention for his impressive performances in the latter half of the previous season, aimed to deliver an exceptional 2023 campaign worthy of the Landon Donovan MLS MVP title. This season marked his debut as a Designated Player.

While Puig had already displayed flashes of brilliance in his playmaking abilities, he had yet to produce a defining performance that matched his lofty ambitions.

When asked about his goal against LAFC earlier this season, which was a remarkable solo effort in the US Open Cup Round of 16 that garnered attention when he removed his jersey in front of the passionate Black & Gold supporters, Puig expressed his only regret: not being able to repeat the celebration.

"I really wanted to do it again," he admitted. "But the truth is, if I had received a yellow card, I wouldn't have been able to play on Saturday against the Philadelphia Union."

On the other hand, LA Galaxy's head coach and sporting director, Gregg Vanney, focused on highlighting Puig's exceptional abilities. He described Tuesday's performance as one of the finest he had witnessed from the La Masia Academy graduate while wearing a Galaxy uniform.

"Considering the occasion, the stadium, the number of people, and the spectacle tonight, he was outstanding," Vanney remarked.

"He's operating on a different level. When he receives the ball, changes direction, and accelerates through the defense, it's like he's moving at a different speed."

Boyd, who scored his second impressive goal in consecutive El Tráficos, also praised Puig.

"He's an incredible player. I think we're developing a great understanding, especially him and me," the US international stated. "Today, it was evident. He provided the first assist, and I returned the favor for the second goal. It's nice to establish that connection."

Puig found immense satisfaction in Tuesday's outcome, surpassing the significance of securing three points. This victory marked the Galaxy's first win in more than a month and extended their unbeaten streak to six consecutive games (2 wins, 0 losses, 4 draws). However, what truly delighted Puig was the unparalleled joy he experienced on a historic evening.

"To participate in such games is why every player embraces soccer," expressed the midfielder. "To perform in these grand stadiums, captivating the attention of 82,000 spectators."

"For me, it's not about money; it's about these priceless moments," Puig emphasized. "I felt like a young child, overwhelmed with pure delight."
