Luciano Acosta Named Captain for MLS All-Stars in 2023
Luciano Acosta, the midfielder for FC Cincinnati, has been chosen as the captain for the MLS All-Stars in their upcoming match against Arsenal in the 2023 MLS All-Star Game. The game is scheduled to be held at Audi Field in Washington, D.C. on July 19 at 8 pm ET.
Acosta earned the captaincy through the 2023 MLS All-Star Captain Fan Vote, which was presented by Captain Morgan. Other notable contenders for the role included Christian Benteke, the striker for D.C. United, Roman Bürki, the goalkeeper for St. Louis CITY SC, and Walker Zimmerman, the defender for Nashville SC.
Having served as captain on 79 occasions, Acosta holds the record for the most times leading FC Cincinnati. This season, he was recognized as one of the top three All-Stars from the Supporters' Shield leaders, alongside defenders Álvaro Barreal and Matt Miazga.
The 29-year-old Argentine has had an exceptional season with FC Cincinnati, scoring 10 goals in 20 regular-season appearances. He currently ranks third in the MLS with 17 goal contributions. Acosta's outstanding performances have earned him a spot in the MLS Team of the Matchday, presented by Audi, on seven occasions this season.
This will mark Acosta's second appearance in the All-Star Game, following his participation in the 2022 event. He will reunite with All-Star Coach Wayne Rooney, his former teammate at D.C. United, where their dynamic partnership was widely acclaimed as "Luchoroo." Additionally, Acosta will showcase his skills in the 2023 MLS All-Star Skills Challenge on July 18 at 7:30 pm ET.
