Reports from U.S. media indicate that Larry Nassar, the disgraced doctor of USA Gymnastics convicted of sexually abusing young female gymnasts, has suffered multiple stab wounds in prison from another inmate. As of Monday, Nassar's condition was reported to be stable.

The Federal Bureau of Prisons confirmed that an assault took place on Sunday afternoon at the U.S. Penitentiary Coleman in Florida but withheld the identity of the involved inmate for privacy and security reasons.

According to Benjamin O'Cone, spokesperson for the bureau, immediate life-saving measures were taken by the responding staff, and Nassar was subsequently transferred to a local hospital for further assessment and treatment.

The incident has been reported to the FBI, which is now conducting an internal investigation, as stated by O'Cone. There were no additional injuries reported among the prison staff or other inmates.

Joe Rojas, president of the local correction officers' union, disclosed that Nassar sustained ten stab wounds, including two to the neck, two to the back, and six to the chest.

Larry Nassar was convicted in 2018 for sexually abusing numerous young female gymnasts, including well-known Olympic gold medalists Simone Biles, Aly Raisman, and McKayla Maroney. His conviction followed a significant week-long hearing where 160 victims, many of whom were minors when subjected to the abuse, bravely shared their stories.

In the aftermath of the Nassar scandal, USA Gymnastics underwent significant leadership changes and filed for bankruptcy due to the multitude of lawsuits brought by hundreds of women who were victims of Nassar's abuse during his time as the team doctor.

Michigan State University, Nassar's former employer, reached a $500 million settlement with the victims, while USA Gymnastics and the U.S. Olympic & Paralympic Committee settled for $380 million.

A July 2021 report by Justice Department Inspector General Michael Horowitz exposed serious and widespread errors committed by the FBI, which allowed Nassar to continue his abuse and victimize at least 70 more individuals before his eventual arrest.

In September 2021, Simone Biles and McKayla Maroney, along with other Olympic gymnasts, provided heartbreaking testimony before a U.S. Senate panel, recounting the years of sexual abuse they endured under Nassar's care. During the hearing, the gymnasts strongly criticized the FBI for mishandling the investigation, with Biles accusing the bureau of disregarding Nassar's victims.
