Iga Swiatek's Wimbledon campaign came to an end in a quarter-final loss to Ukrainian wildcard Elina Svitolina, highlighting the unpredictable nature of the sport. Despite Swiatek's impressive 14-match winning streak, Svitolina remained resilient, facing powerful shots from the seasoned Grand Slam champion. Following a grueling three-hour battle, Svitolina emerged victorious, bringing joy to her troubled homeland and earning a spot in the semi-finals against Marketa Vondrousova from the Czech Republic.
Expressing her emotions after the remarkable feat, Svitolina shared her disbelief and happiness, remarking, "I can't believe what's happening in my head right now. It's truly unbelievable. If someone had told me at the beginning of the tournament that I would reach the semi-finals and defeat the world number one, I would have thought they were crazy! I'm glad I could bring a little joy to the people of Ukraine."
Initially, Svitolina faced difficulties as Swiatek took a 4-2 lead in the opening set, taking advantage of the challenging serving conditions on Centre Court. However, Svitolina made an impressive comeback, winning 16 of the next 18 points, which included breaking Swiatek's serve twice in succession. Swiatek was left perplexed as Svitolina secured the set, aided by a 20-minute break to close the roof. Swiatek regrouped and managed to break Svitolina's serve, taking a 2-1 lead in the second set.
