Borussia Dortmund Signs Marcel Sabitzer from Bayern Munich in €19 Million Deal
On Monday, Borussia Dortmund, the Bundesliga runners-up, announced the acquisition of Austria midfielder Marcel Sabitzer from their arch-rivals Bayern Munich on a four-year contract. Though the financial specifics were not officially disclosed, German media sources reported that the 29-year-old footballer sealed the deal with Dortmund for an estimated sum of 19 million euros ($21.05 million).
Marcel Sabitzer, who has earned 71 international caps and holds the position of Austria's vice-captain, previously joined Bayern Munich in 2021 from RB Leipzig. However, in February, he was temporarily loaned to the Premier League side Manchester United. Now, with his move to Borussia Dortmund, Sabitzer expressed his excitement, saying, "I can't wait to finally join the team and wear the BVB jersey. The discussions with Dortmund's managers were excellent and showed me how ambitious the club wants to be in the coming years."
The talented midfielder added, "I would like to do my part to ensure that BVB achieves its goals and that it has every reason to celebrate something special with its fans again as soon as possible."
During his time with Bayern Munich, Marcel Sabitzer made 54 appearances, contributing with goals and assists. While on loan at Manchester United, he scored three goals and provided one assist in 18 games.
Dortmund's Sporting Director, Sebastian Kehl, praised Sabitzer's qualities, stating, "Marcel is an experienced player who has been performing at the top international level for years. He fits exactly the profile we were looking for." Kehl highlighted Sabitzer's physical strength and goal-scoring threat, expressing confidence that the player's personality would become an essential pillar of the team. Kehl believed that Sabitzer's presence would make the team even more effective in hard-fought matches.
This transfer comes after Bayern Munich secured their 11th consecutive Bundesliga title in a dramatic finale during the last match of the season in May, edging out Dortmund, who were determined to clinch their first German top-flight title in 11 years. With Sabitzer joining Dortmund, the team aims to strengthen their squad and challenge for silverware in the upcoming seasons.
