Kylian Mbappe's Inspiring Influence in Bondy: Navigating Riots and Promoting Calm in Marginalized Communities
In the worn-down suburb of Bondy in Paris, Kylian Mbappe's hometown, some residents have sought guidance from the 24-year-old French soccer star on how to navigate a wave of riots affecting their community and similar areas.
The riots were triggered by the tragic shooting of Nahel M., a teenager of North African descent, by the police on June 27. This incident sparked anger among numerous young individuals residing in France's economically disadvantaged, ethnically diverse, and chronically marginalized suburbs.
While pleas for peace from politicians and law enforcement officials went unnoticed during nights of unrest, Mbappe's expressions of grief over Nahel's shooting and his calls for calm struck a chord with certain individuals.
"There is no doubt that Mbappe's tweets played a significant role. He paid tribute to Nahel and voiced his desire for the situation to de-escalate," stated Rohat Sari, a soccer coach at a sports club in Bondy.
"If Mbappe's words carry more weight than those of a minister, it's because he took action. He did something that we witnessed, that we appreciated, and that stirred emotions within us," he added.
As children from Bondy made their way to the sports club, they encountered a large mural celebrating Mbappe, the Paris St Germain striker, and his accomplishments, juxtaposed with the charred remnants of cars, evidence of recent turmoil.
Eric Ousmane Ngam Atah, whose 12-year-old son Yacine plays soccer at the club, expressed gratitude to Mbappe for speaking out. Atah believed that Mbappe's actions reinforced his role as a role model for young people in places like Bondy.
"It gives them hope to see that someone who grew up here under the same conditions has achieved such success. It's an incredibly important message. It can bring them peace because he is an example for them," remarked Atah.
In his initial public statement on the series of events, Mbappe tweeted on June 28, expressing profound sorrow for France, denouncing the situation as unacceptable, and offering condolences to Nahel's family, whom he referred to as an angel.
Two days later, Mbappe shared a more extensive statement in which he acknowledged people's anger but condemned the manner in which it was being expressed. He expressed sadness over the burning of cars and buildings in the suburbs, labeling them acts of self-destruction.
