Former Arkansas quarterback Ryan Mallett, who had a successful career in the NFL playing for teams such as New England, Houston, and Baltimore, has tragically passed away at the age of 35. The Okaloosa County Sheriff's Office reported that Mallett's death appeared to be the result of a drowning incident. The devastating news was also confirmed by the White Hall High School, where Mallett served as a football coach in his hometown of Arkansas, as they posted about his untimely demise on their website.
Expressing his condolences, Arkansas athletic director Hunter Yurachek described Mallett as an extraordinary individual, stating, "Our thoughts and prayers are with the family, friends, and teammates of Ryan Mallett."
Mallett began his football journey at the University of Michigan before transferring to Arkansas to complete his college career. During his time with the Razorbacks, he showcased his talent by throwing for an impressive 7,493 yards and 62 touchdowns over two seasons.
In the 2011 NFL draft, Mallett was selected by the New England Patriots in the third round. Although his appearances with the team were limited, completing only 1 of 4 passes for 17 yards in four games during the 2012 season, his passing skills did not go unnoticed by head coach Bill Belichick. Belichick expressed deep sadness at Mallett's tragic passing, saying, "My thoughts and prayers are with his family and the many people whose lives he touched."
Mallett continued his professional career, making starts for the Houston Texans and the Baltimore Ravens. Despite facing challenges and recording 10 interceptions, he managed to complete 190 of his 345 attempts, accumulating 1,835 yards and throwing nine touchdowns.
