The news of Lionel Messi's reunion with Barcelona had already been announced by the media. The formal announcement was pending. Inter Miami informed the media by officially appointing Gerard "Tata" Martino as their coach. The former coach of Argentina and Barcelona has taken charge of Miami. Messi has not yet officially joined the club with Miami. European media outlets have reported that Messi will sign the contract in the first week of July. On July 16, Miami can introduce him as their player.

Before becoming the coach of Miami, Martino was in charge of the Mexican national team at the age of 60. He has previous experience working in MLS. In 2018, he won the championship with Atlanta United. The appointment of a new coach was expected in Miami. Miami is currently at the bottom of the points table in the Eastern Conference of MLS. Due to poor performance, the position of the coach was vacated, and former England full-back Phil Neville was released. Afterward, interim coach Javier Morales took over the team. Martino's arrival is only a matter of time before Messi's reunion.

Regarding Martino's appointment as the coach, Miami co-owner Jorge Mas said, "At Inter Miami, we welcome Tata. We believe he can fulfill the goals we have as a club. Tata has coached at the highest level. We have faith that his vast experience will contribute to our success in the league and playoffs."

Midfielder Martino has emerged in the position of an attacking midfielder in his playing career, much like Messi, from the Argentine club Newell's Old Boys. His contract with Argentina ended with their elimination from the group stage of the Qatar World Cup. Since then, he had been unemployed until fulfilling the role of the Argentine coach from 2014 to 2016. He had received the responsibility of the Argentina national team from Alejandro Sabella. Although he reached the finals of the 2015 and 2016 Copa America with Messi, he couldn't win the trophy. Martino left the responsibility of the Argentina national team on July 5, 2016.

Before taking charge of Argentina, Martino was the coach of Barcelona. After the departure of Tito Vilanova, on July 7, 2013, Barcelona officially announced him as the coach. In the 2013-14 season, he remained undefeated in 21 matches with Messi at Barcelona. However, he couldn't win the league. On the final day of the league, they lost the title to Atletico Madrid. During his one-year tenure at Barcelona, Martino won the Spanish Super Cup.

That same Martino, as a coach, is now getting his two former disciples, Lionel Messi and Sergio Busquets, back in Miami. After Messi's announcement, Busquets joined Miami. Martino didn't directly say anything about them. In a brief interview on Miami's official account, Martino only said, 'The new players who will come are very important for the team.
