Initially, it is reported that there was a collision between the train and a goods train near Balasore Junction. As a result, multiple coaches of the Kormaondol Express derailed and overturned. According to preliminary information, the accident occurred near Balasore in Odisha involving the Kormaondol Express bound for Chennai. It is initially known that multiple compartments of the train have been derailed. At least 30 fatalities have been reported initially. It is reported by railway sources that 179 people have been admitted to Balasore Hospital.
It is known that the Shalimar station departed the 12841 Up Kormaondol Express at 3:15 PM. It departed from Kharagpur station in West Medinipur around 5 PM. The train reached Balasore around 6:30 PM. Immediately after that, the accident occurred near Bahanaga Bazar, affecting 23 compartments of the train.
Aditya Chowdhury, the Chief Public Relations Officer of South-Eastern Railways, said, "Something has happened to the Kormaondol Express near Balasore. We have not been able to gather any information yet. We are trying to find out. As soon as we know, it will be informed."
According to local sources, the Kormaondol Express collided with a goods train. As a result, except for the first three compartments, all the other compartments of the Kormaondol Express have fallen off the track. The impact of the accident was so severe that the engine of the Kormaondol Express climbed onto the goods train.
