According to Nepali media sources, many people have gone to Russia and joined the military forces of that country. They have received training there. After that, Nepalis have also participated in the conflict in Ukraine.

For nearly a year, there has been a war going on in Eastern Europe. Foreigners have joined the conflict between Russia and Ukraine as well. Russia has provided weapons to foreign youths to work in their military forces. Nepalis have also obtained those weapons, including the one issued by President Vladimir Putin. According to reports from Nepali media, Nepali youths have joined Putin's army gradually with the specific aim of achieving special objectives. They are fighting against Ukraine on behalf of Putin.

But why? What motivates Nepalis to be interested in the war between Russia and Ukraine?

According to a report by The Diplomat, Putin has made certain proposals with the goal of strengthening the military forces by engaging foreign youths in the war. Russia has informed that if they engage in a year-long war in their military forces, they will have the opportunity to reside in Russia with their families. Those foreign soldiers will also be granted permanent citizenship in Russia. Additionally, there is a significant financial incentive in terms of a high salary.

Young generations of small countries like Nepal have not been able to secure a certain future in Russia. Many have left their country and gone to Russia. Nepali expatriates residing in Russia have also joined the military forces out of a desire for citizenship.

An unwilling Nepali youth, who joined the Russian army, revealed in an interview with the Nepali press that he received training before joining the Russian military. He also mentioned that the salary he received during training was several times higher than the average salary of a regular government job in Nepal. While there is indeed a risk to life in war, this risk seems more appealing than living a life of minimal effort or being unemployed in Nepal.

Language was initially a significant problem when it came to joining the Russian military. However, Nepali youths reported that although initially they were told to learn the Russian language, later this requirement was relaxed. Currently, knowledge of English alone is sufficient to join the Russian army.

Having become Russian citizens, some Nepali youths have also participated in the conflict in Ukraine as mercenaries. According to many, some Nepali youths have joined the Wagner Group as well. They are fighting against Ukraine.

However, the Nepali embassy in Russia has stated that they have no official information regarding Nepalis joining the Russian military. Even if it does happen, no action has been taken to inform the embassy.
