New information has been disclosed about the Coronation Robes that will be worn by The King and The Queen Consort in preparation for their upcoming Coronation. The tradition includes two types of robes: the Robes of State and the Robes of Estate. Upon arrival at Westminster Abbey, The Robes of State are worn, whereas The Robes of Estate, which are typically customized in design, are worn after the Coronation Service.


Recently released images showcase The King's Robe of State, which is being conserved by the Royal School of Needlework. The crimson velvet robe was previously worn by King George VI during the 1937 Coronation, and the lining and gold lace have also undergone conservation by Ede and Ravenscroft.

The Queen Consort's Robe of Estate, made of crimson velvet, was originally created for Queen Elizabeth II's Coronation in 1953. It has been adjusted by robemakers at Ede and Ravenscroft in preparation for the upcoming Coronation.


Regarding the departure robes, The King's Robe of Estate, made of purple silk velvet with gold embroidery, was worn by King George VI in 1937. It has been conserved and prepared by the experts at Ede and Ravenscroft. The Queen Consort's new Robe of Estate was designed and hand-embroidered by the Royal School of Needlework, with the robe itself made by Ede and Ravenscroft.


The Queen Consort's robe draws inspiration from nature and the environment, incorporating national emblems of the United Kingdom and paying tribute to The King. The purple velvet used matches The King's Robe of Estate, and the Goldwork technique was employed by the Royal School of Needlework for embroidery, incorporating Her Majesty's cipher. The robe features insects like bees and a beetle, which have never before been seen on a Coronation Robe, reflecting the couple's affinity for the natural world.

Several plants are prominently featured on the robe, including the Lily of the Valley, a favorite flower of Queen Elizabeth II, and Myrtle, symbolizing hope. The robe also incorporates Delphinium, a favorite flower of The King, and the birth flower of July, the Queen Consort's birth month. Lady's Mantle symbolizes love and comfort, Maidenhair Fern represents purity, and cornflowers symbolize love and tenderness are also incorporated. The cornflowers also aid in attracting and supporting wildlife such as bees and butterflies.
