Pichai and Sam are struggling to keep pace with AI
The rapid progress of AI is creating anxiety among people. Both Google and OpenAI, despite their extensive work on AI, are now urging the government to regulate AI development. According to a report by Fortune, the top executives of OpenAI stated on Monday that it is necessary for government directors to work together to mitigate the risks of 'superintelligence' or advanced AI development.
OpenAI's CEO, Sam Altman, wrote in a blog post, "Our future could be dramatically better, but it could also be much worse. We need to reduce the risk as we go there."
However, the call for AI caution is not exclusive to these individuals. Sundar Pichai, the CEO of Alphabet and Google, also proposed that the government should be urged to have more control over AI development. In a report by the Financial Times on Monday, Pichai stated, "AI needs to be controlled in a way that maintains the integrity of innovation and potential harm. I still believe that AI regulation is very important."
Pichai advised that when formulating policies to ensure the safety of AI, the government, experts, educators, and the general public should all be involved in the discussions. He further emphasized the importance of countries working together to create strong regulations.
Pichai also stressed the importance of international cooperation in future AI regulation efforts, urging the United States and Europe to collaborate in controlling AI. Similarly, Altman expressed the same sentiment, advocating for enhanced coordination and cooperation among different groups and countries in his own blog post.
He stated, "Creating a global organization, like the International Atomic Energy Agency (IAEA), that regulates AI at a high level and ensures the development of AI principles is necessary. We need an international body like the IAEA for the supervision, audit, agreement on safety measures, and prohibition of abuse at a significant project level."
Both CEOs highlighted the transformative impact of AI on humanity. Altman stated that AI would have more power over humanity than any previous technology, and Pichai claimed that AI is currently the most profound technology created by humans.
