One month later, on December 15, he was christened by the Archbishop of Canterbury, Dr. Geoffrey Fisher, and given the name Charles Philip Arthur George.

After the death of his grandfather, King George VI, at the age of 56 on February 6, 1952, his mother was proclaimed Queen Elizabeth II at the age of 25, and the Prince of Wales became the heir apparent at the age of three.

As the heir to the throne, the Prince automatically assumed the traditional titles of Duke of Cornwall, under a charter of King Edward III in 1337, and in the Scottish peerage, Duke of Rothesay, Earl of Carrick, Baron Renfrew, Lord of the Isles, and Prince and Great Steward of Scotland.

At the age of four, the Prince attended his mother's coronation on June 2, 1953, at Westminster Abbey. The memory of the young Prince sitting between his widowed grandmother, Queen Elizabeth The Queen Mother, and his aunt, Princess Margaret, is still vivid for many who witnessed the coronation.

Charles III Education

After spending 10 months at home, the young Prince became a boarding student at Cheam School, a preparatory school in Berkshire. In 1958, when he was nine years old, The Queen bestowed upon him the titles of The Prince of Wales and Earl of Chester while he was still at Cheam.

In April 1962, the Prince of Wales commenced his first term at Gordonstoun, a school located near Elgin in Eastern Scotland, which his father, the Duke of Edinburgh, had also attended. He spent two terms in 1966 as an exchange student at Timbertop, a remote outpost of the Geelong Church of England Grammar School in Melbourne, Australia.

Returning to Gordonstoun for his final year, The Prince of Wales was appointed school guardian (head boy). He had already passed six O Levels and went on to take A Levels, receiving a grade B in history and a C in French, along with a distinction in an optional special history paper in July 1967.

In 1967, The Prince of Wales began studying archaeology and anthropology at Trinity College, Cambridge University. He later changed his field to history for the second part of his degree and received a 2:2 degree in 1970.

Charles III Military career

From 1971 to 1976, Charles III served in the Royal Navy. He underwent jet pilot training at the Royal Air Force College Cranwell in Lincolnshire, after which he served on guided missile destroyers and frigates. In 1974, he qualified as a helicopter pilot and became a member of the 845 Naval Air Squadron, which operated from the Commando carrier HMS Hermes. Charles III had the opportunity to command the coastal minehunter HMS Bronington during his time in the Navy.

Charles III Family and Married Life

Prince Charles and Lady Diana Spencer were wedded at St Paul's Cathedral on July 29, 1981. Lady Diana's father was a former equerry to both George VI and Queen Elizabeth II, while her maternal grandmother was a close friend and Lady-in-Waiting to the Queen Mother. Together, the Prince and Princess of Wales had two sons: Prince William, born in 1982, and Prince Harry, born in 1984.

From the start of their marriage, they traveled on overseas tours and carried out numerous engagements in the UK. However, on December 9, 1992, it was announced by the Prime Minister that the couple had separated. Their divorce was finalized on August 28, 1996. Despite the divorce, the Princess remained a member of the Royal Family and continued to work for a number of charities.

When the Princess died in a car crash in Paris on August 31, 1997, the Prince of Wales flew to Paris with her two sisters to bring her body back to London. On the day of her funeral, the Prince walked behind her coffin with their two sons, Prince William, then 15, and Prince Harry, then 12, along with The Duke of Edinburgh and the Princess's brother, Earl Spencer.

After the Princess's death, Prince Charles requested privacy for his sons to allow them to have a normal school life. Over the years, both Prince William and Prince Harry have accompanied their father on official engagements in the UK and abroad.

On April 9, 2005, Prince Charles married Camilla Parker Bowles in a civil ceremony at the Guildhall, Windsor. After the wedding, Parker Bowles became known as HRH The Duchess of Cornwall. The couple was joined by approximately 800 guests for a Service of Prayer and Dedication at St George's Chapel, Windsor Castle, followed by a reception at Windsor Castle hosted by Queen Elizabeth II.

The coronation ceremony is planned to take place on Saturday, May 6th, which will be the 40th time the event has been held in Westminster Abbey. The abbey has been the traditional venue for the ceremony since 1066.
